Hermann Oak® Leather Co. was started by Lewis Charles Hermann in St. Louis, Missouri in 1881 to serve the local harness trade. Three more generations of Hermanns have followed in Lewis’s footsteps to bring the finest quality vegetable leathers to market. The tanning process has not changed much through the years. They still use the finest natural tree bark in their tanning liquors for richness and texture. And, each side is soaked in ground-vats and hand-worked for smooth, consistent and firm results.
We’re so confident in the leather we sell that we offer free returns on leather, excluding leather panels, pieces and belt blanks. If the leather we ship you isn’t exactly what you hoped for, we will cover the return shipping cost — no matter what the reason is. It’s our goal to provide you with the highest quality leather that will make the perfect canvas for your project.

"Easy to work with and looks great!!!"
"This was my first purchase of any Herman Oak veg tan leather and I wanted to make a belt. I've been reading all the hype about how great their leather is for tooling and I wanted to see for myself. Well, I get it now. This was the perfect choice for making a belt and it really did tool very nicely. I will be using Herman Oak for all my veg tan projects from now on."
"Beautiful leather can’t wait to work with"
"First thing to keep in mind with this is you are purchasing a remnant. Instead of a bag of different leathers, sizes and possible weights. We get a may get a belly that has one side a natural edge and a uneven cut edge. When we are wondering if we want to step up to start using a higher quality of hide this is where you want to start. This stamps really well, feels pretty even through out the piece. I didn't see many holes and I cannot wait to see what things I can make with this."
"Great weight, great quality for the price. If you’re doing small items this is the leather you need."
"Wonderful leather. I was about to an acorn bag from it. The original shipment never arrived but I believe it's to blame on the carrier, not weaver. Their customer service team was kind and quick with helping getting me a new shipment and this one actually arrived! I'm so happy with it and I'd recommend this company to a friend."
"I was surprised how nice this belly looked"
"Well worth the money! Stained up very easily and was used on bifold and roper wallets liners"
"Beautiful quality hide, pale in color, nearly entirely useable with only a few rough edges. A great selection amongst many choices. I’ll definitely purchase again!"
"Great quality. Will order again for continued projects!"
