Additional Details

Native Americans and American frontiersman alike prized deerskin for its amazing feel against the skin, making it the hide of choice for making clothing and moccasins that withstood the demands of their harsh environment. From high end purse designers to craftspeople searching for just the right liner, a wide range of artisans utilize deerskin in their work where buttery softness is of paramount importance. Our genuine deerskin is chrome tanned and comes in whole hides that offer beautiful color on both the grain and the flesh sides.

Difference

The time involved and expense of veg tanned leathers led to the development of chrome tanning in the mid-1800s. Chrome tanning takes about a day in contrast to the one to three-month veg tanning process, making it a more economical choice. Today, about 80-90% of the world’s leather supply is chrome tanned and it is heralded for its stain and water resistance as well as its consistency in color.

Thickness, texture and color was

"Thickness, texture and color was consistent throughout the piece. I used it on my RV door interior around the door latch where some simulated leather fabric had worn out. Very easy to cut and tack in place. I plan to make something for my grandkids with the remnant."

Very good quality piece. Priced

"Very good quality piece. Priced right. Will buy again"

Bernardo C. (5/5)

Great Quality!

"I'm very pleased with the quality! No blemishes and only a couple small holes near the edges. Worked great for the top I'm making. It wasn't as dark as I was hoping for, but that's the only negative thing I can say. Overall, it was a great purchase."

Macy (5/5)

Not as described

"Not as described. Very thin from .8 to 1.1; multiple large holes, and approx size is only 21x30. Must have come from a skinny Texas deer. Not typical of products I’ve purchased from Weaver"

Deb (1/5)

Good leather but my piece looked a little beat up!

"The leather is soft and supple. But unfortunately the piece I received, the front and back of the leather looked a little old beat up. Not sure if all pieces are like this but not very happy about that but the leather itself is pretty nice."

Vinayak D. (4/5)

Beautiful!

"Beautiful hide and size is as expected. It is very soft and supple with a nice drape. I used mine for moccasins and it feels so good-it's like I'm barefoot. There were three small holes in it from a bullet or arrow, but they tell you this in the description, so I expected it and it was no problem."

E. S. (5/5)

"This leather is super soft and nice my only complaint is that it's so expensive for size it was super small ill probably only get about one project out of it. I won't be buying it again."

Derek (2/5)

Deer hide

"Nice piece of hide. I have a couple projects in mind and thiss should do it."

Donald B. (5/5)

Deerskin

"I ordered this item to make my Son a leather carpenters apron. When it arrived it was much too small and had two oval shaped holes in it (the description advised that their would be bullet or arrow holes). I checked Weaver and found a larger, heavier piece and ordered it via telephone. The woman said that they would send the largest one they could find. A few days later it arrived and was perfect. I had plenty of time to complete the project. Thanks to your efforts, we will have a Merry Christmas. I would advise against buying the deerskin for any medium to large projects but am totally happy with Weaver Leather Supply."
