The lighter weight allows the leather to conform more closely to the custom form and capture the smaller details of the design.\u003cbr\u003eCut the overlay pieces with enough extra leather around the perimeter to give yourself room to work.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch2 style=\"text-align: left;\"\u003e\n\u003cstrong\u003eStep 2:\u003c\/strong\u003e Wet Form the Leather\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"text-align: left;\"\u003eThoroughly wet the vegetable-tanned leather and let it rest for about 15 minutes so the moisture can move evenly through the fibers.\u003cbr\u003ePlace the leather over the form and begin working it into the design with your hands. Take your time. Repeated passes help build definition while reducing the chance of unwanted tool marks.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"text-align: left;\"\u003eA bone folder, rounded strip of leather or smooth dowel can help work the leather into tighter areas.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch2 style=\"text-align: left;\"\u003e\n\u003cstrong\u003eStep 3:\u003c\/strong\u003e Let the Formed Leather Dry\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"text-align: left;\"\u003eOnce you’ve developed the shape, leave the leather in place and allow it to dry completely.\u003cbr\u003eChuck recommends at least 12 hours.\u003cbr\u003eThe leather will retain the dimensional shape as it dries.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch2 style=\"text-align: left;\"\u003e\n\u003cstrong\u003eStep 4:\u003c\/strong\u003e Prepare the Arm Guard Bodies\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"text-align: left;\"\u003eTransfer the arm guard pattern to the heavier vegetable-tanned leather.\u003cbr\u003eCut the pieces, round the corners and mark the lace holes.\u003cbr\u003eAdd a decorative groove around the perimeter, then bevel both sides of the edge to begin creating a smooth, rounded profile.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch2 style=\"text-align: left;\"\u003e\n\u003cstrong\u003eStep 5:\u003c\/strong\u003e Punch and Burnish\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"text-align: left;\"\u003ePunch the lace holes with a round drive punch.\u003cbr\u003eLightly dampen the beveled edges and work them with a leather slicker.
